When Google penalized the MyMlogGuest.com in march 2014, many SEO’s felt that using Guest posting for SEO was dead. Sites linked to and from MyBlogGuest also received a manual action penalty. Matt Cutts the head of Googles spam team tweeted
Today we took action on a large guest blog network. A reminder about the spam risks of guest blogging.
However, some of the top search engine optimization Guru’s such as Neil Patel and Brian Dean, who are known advocates of “White Hat SEO” techniques are still teaching Guest Blogging SEO strategies.
Ann Smarty the founder of MyMlogGuest responded to being penalized by Google by tweeting
[Official] Even though
#myblogguest has been against paying for links (unlike other platforms),@mattcutts team decided to penalize us…
Ann went on to say
“The reality is, Matt Cutts is using us for the PR game: To get more people scared. We are the hugest guest blogging brand out there: He could not have got more publicity by hitting anyone else.“
And again, in a later blog post she said
NOW, TO THE FACT: WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED?
I have just re-verified MyBlogGuest in GWT (it had been dropped earlier after some bug) and here’s the error they are giving:
Google has detected a pattern of unnatural artificial, deceptive, or manipulative links pointing to pages on this site. These may be the result of buying links that pass PageRank or participating in link schemes.
That means Google didn’t like links TO our site.
Many people are still successfully utilizing Guest Blogging for SEO and reporting great results in the search rankings today by blogging on sites that are authoritative in their industry or niche, which comes with high traffic volumes as well as backlinks from these sites.
It seems that gues posting is alive and well and if you choose to do it then the quality and reputation of the site will determine how successful the strategy will work for you.
